Come down to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park’s Hyde Street Pier for hands-on classes in traditional boatbuilding and maritime crafts. In the Boat Shop:

Quarterly Small Craft Collection Tour.
Instructor: John Muir.
Dates: May 5, August 11, November 3
Fee: Free
A curator will take you behind the scenes to discuss the design/construction of nearly 100 small boats.

Introduction to Bronze Casting.
Instructor: Sam Johnson.
Dates: June 9, 10 (Limit to 12 people)
Fee: $100
Build your own melting furnace and create a variety of boat hardware.

Oar, Paddle & Spar Making.
Instructor: John Heid.
Date: June 30, July 1 and July 7, July 8
Fee: $125
Learn to use a variety of tools to craft an elegant paddle, spar, or pair of oars.

Maritime Sketchbook in Color.
Instructor: Amy Hosa
Sat, August 18 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the SFMNHP
Fee: $95
Using watercolor and color pencil, explore a variety of techniques. All levels welcome.

Diesel Engine Maintenance
Instructor: Jake Roulstone
Sat, October 27
Fee: $100
This class guides the novice through the routine maintenance of the marine diesel.

On the Water:

Pelican racing series.
Instructor: Age of Sail staff and Small Boat shop staff
Date: Tuesdays, April 17—May 24. 6 p.m. to dark.
Fee: $40; $20 for Association Members and Park Staff
Come down and try out your racing skill in a San Francisco Pelican. This informal racing series is always a favorite.

Small Boat Sailing.
Instructor: Age of Sail staff.
Date: April 21, 22, 28, 29. Adults (18 and over) and Youth (12-18).
Fee: $150
Learn small boat sailing theory and practical skills.

Sacramento Delta Gunkholing.
Instructor: Boat shop staff
2007 class is sold out! Reservations necessary for 2008. Phone-in RSVP for the 2008 class will begin August 1 on a first come, first served basis.

China Camp Trip.
Instructor: Small Boat shop staff
Date: Aug 25, 26.
This weekend excursion is open to Park and Association staff, volunteers and members and TSCA members. Join us on a voyage to China Camp State Park in San Rafael (birthplace of the San Francisco Bay shrimp junk Grace Quan) coincides with the State Park’s Heritage Days Weekend. After sailing to the China Camp beach, enjoy the cultural events and celebrations and the lovely China Camp.

All classes presented in San Francisco, at the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park's Small Boat Shop, on Hyde Street Pier.

A limited amount of overnight lodging is available to students aboard our historic ships at Hyde Street Pier. Cost is $35 per night. The experience is 4 star "primitive camping". Please contact Bill Doll at (415) 859-6779 to determine the availability.

Workshop facilities and most materials and power tools will be provided. Students may have to supply their own handtools. If required, a tool list will be sent after enrollment.
